Mechanisation and motorisation

Technological change in agriculture is heavily influenced by the spatial and temporal characteristics of agricultural production. Therefore, the process of mechanising agricultural production was up to the middle of the 20th century mainly powered by a rising number of working animals. The clunky steel horse named tractor of the early 20th century only became a versatile, multifunctional oil-fuelled power-centre of the farm with the development of the power take-off in the 1940/50s.
