Organic agriculture

Organic farming is a relatively new phenomenon, although its roots can be traced back to peasant agriculture before artificial manure and chemical additives became important elements in the process of food production in the middle of the 20th century. Since organic farmers abstain from using synthetic additives, they must implement more labour in order to obtain similar yields and qualities. Organic farmers began to get organised in their own institutions in the 1920s and strengthened these attempts in the post-war period. Towards the end of the 20th century, a wider public as well as state agencies began to recognise and support organic agriculture as an alternative way of food production.
