   Impression of the farmers life in the wetland De Burd near Grou.
De Burd (De Bird in dutch) is an island northeast of the village of Grou. The western part is cut of from the island by the Prinses Margrietcanal. On this part is nowadays recreation resort Yn ‘e Lijte and is accessible from the village by a bridge. De Burd is accessible by ferry. The pattern with ditches which you can find on a big part of the island exists from the 15th century and since then it has a agricultural function. In the 20th century this was extended with when some recreation houses and houseboats were build. At the end of the 20th century a large part of the island is under control of it Fryske Gea (provincial nature preservation organization) which tolerates agriculture aimed on the protecting of meadow birds. Since 2006 the island is part of National Park “De Alde Feanen. On the island are some mils.
